Academics
Through our academic program, students affirm the values of their own cultures while acquiring and understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of other cultures and communities through the core values of Identity, Solidarity, Intellect, and Justice. A caring, cooperative, and inclusive school climate is actively fostered to promote the socio-emotional and cognitive development of the whole child, in which parents and families are active partners in the education of their children.
Bilingual Education
At Academia Cesar Chavez, our Bilingual Education program is designed to support our students to excel in Spanish and English. Using a mixture of language development strategies, our main focus is growing strong foundational skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the Spanish and English languages for our multilingual community. The perspective of Academia Cesar Chavez is that our students are oftentimes multilingual, and they bring with them an incredible wealth of knowledge from their background and experiences. The students showcase this knowledge through demonstrating concepts such as their unique frame of thinking, finding ways to communicate with peers who come from different backgrounds, and confidence in sharing their unique ideas with their teachers. Our teachers also realize that they are not the only educators in the room: they understand that our students have so much to share and offer for a truly collaborative learning environment. This knowledge takes shape in the form of linguistic depth, social and cultural experiences, and the higher value they place on family and community. Our ultimate goal is to guide our students to be lifelong bilingual learners in the community.
At Academia Cesar Chavez, students learn in both Spanish and English simultaneously within the structure of the Dual Language Bilingual Education model, where language development is supported through standards-based thematic units that are intentionally integrated through not only language arts, but all content areas. With this interdisciplinary approach, students have more agency in engaging with relevant activities that foster meaning and connection to the world around them, while building a sense of their own identity as well.

Humanizing Pedagogical Framework
This educational philosophy is at the heart of how Academia serves our community. A humanizing pedagogy is about centering the cultural and community wealth of students and their families. This framework is about valuing and appreciating one’s own identity while fostering an understanding and appreciation of the differences around oneself. It involves teaching through an intersectional lens in which issues of race and ethnicity are examined in relation to other axes of identity including gender, sexuality, socioeconomic class, religion, nationality, immigration status, language, and ability. This includes critiquing more traditional narratives and utilizing resources from historically underrepresented communities.
